Vale deposits another R$ 1.2 billion to repair Brumadinho; total agreed is BRL 37.7 billion

The mining company Vale informed that it will deposit this Tuesday (31), in court, an amount of R$ 1.2 billion referring to the Judicial Comprehensive Reparation Agreement (AJRI) closed in the scope of compensation to the State of Minas Gerais due to the breach of the Brumadinho dam.

The funds will later be transferred to the state of Minas Gerais and reversed into projects to improve urban mobility and strengthen public services, such as paving roads and renovating hospitals, Vale said.

The agreement was signed in February 2021 between the company, the government of Minas Gerais and justice institutions.

In all, the term provides for R$ 37.7 billion to repair and compensate for all collective damage caused by the rupture of the dam in Brumadinho. Of this total, the approximate amount of R$ 18.5 billion has already been disbursed by Vale.

The amount deposited this Tuesday refers to the payment of the third installments, adjusted for inflation, for the Urban Mobility Program — with an estimated value of R$ 4.95 billion — and for the Strengthening of the Public Service, in the amount of R$ 3.65 billion.

The projects are funded by these amounts made available by the company, and managed and executed by the state government.

At the same time, Vale has been carrying out works to de-characterize upstream dams due to the Brumadinho disaster, which killed around 270 people in 2019.
