The Civil Defense of Rio Grande do Sul reported, this Wednesday (27), that the number of victims caused by heavy rains caused by the passage of an extratropical cyclone through the state at the beginning of the month rose to 50.
The information was updated in the 12pm balance sheet of the Rio Grande do Sul Civil Defense. With the death confirmed in Santa Catarina, the number of deaths in the South region reached 51.

The state also has 8 missing people and the number of people rescued reached 3,130.
At the beginning of September, heavy rains hit 107 municipalities in Rio Grande do Sul, leaving 5,200 homeless and more than 22,000 homeless. In total, 402,297 people were affected. 943 were injured.
R$ 1 billion from BNDES for affected cities
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) announced the granting of a loan of R$1 billion from the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES) to assist in the recovery of the economy in cities in Rio Grande do Sul.
Lula also said that R$600 million will be released from the Severance Indemnity Fund (FGTS) to serve 354 thousand workers.
On a trip to the state, Alckmin announced that the federal government will allocate R$741 million in resources to the regions affected by the rains.
The ministry that will allocate the most resources to the affected areas is that of Cities, which will pay for the construction of housing in the region with R$195 million. Next comes Integration, which will spend R$185 million to provide humanitarian aid and help with the reconstruction of municipalities affected by the rains.
Among other actions, the government also talked about rebuilding basic health units (UBS), redoing a BR-116 bridge over the Rio das Antas and releasing aid of R$800 per person, in two installments of R$400, for the affected municipalities.
Rain in Porto Alegre
The capital of Rio Grande do Sul was also seriously affected by rain throughout the month of September.
The waters of the GuaÃba River invaded the shore in Porto Alegre, causing flooding in the capital of Rio Grande do Sul this Wednesday (27). The forecast for the next few days is rain and strong winds, including hail in the region.
September 2023 is already the wettest month in the city of Porto Alegre since 1916, when regular measurements began. The calculations were made by the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock.
Until Tuesday (26), Inmet had recorded 413.8 mm of rain in the capital of Rio Grande do Sul. The number represents almost triple the city’s normal average rainfall for the month of September, which is approximately 148 mm.
