Vale completed the elimination of three more upstream mining dams in Minas Gerais, meeting the goal of decharacterizing five such structures in 2022, the mining company said on Thursday (29).
The works were completed on the Auxiliary Dike of Dam 5, at the Águas Claras mine, in Nova Lima-MG; and at the Ipoema dam, at the Meio mine, and at Dique 3 of the Pontal System, at Nina Cauê, both in Itabira-MG.
As a result, the company has eliminated 12 dams since 2019, which represent 40% of the 30 structures provided for in its De-characterization Program. Of the 12 structures, nine were located in Minas Gerais and three in the State of Pará.
The de-characterization of upstream dams is part of the transformation in the management of the mining company’s tailings disposal structures and one of the main actions to prevent failures like the one in Brumadinho, in 2019, from happening again.
