Last weekend, the House Valentino unveiled the new advertising campaign for the bags Roman Stud, which reflect the iconic studs Rockstud inspired by and paying homage to Rome: the backgrounds of the shots, in fact, although minimalist, take up the unmistakable tone of the stone that can be admired in the capital, from the ruins of the Imperial Forums to the columns of the Pantheon, framing the spring looks worn by the models. The only exception is the image that sees the same protagonist ad campaign photographer, Michael Bailey-Gates, appeared naked between the columns while carrying one of the bags from the new collection.
A shot that, a few hours after publication, generated awave of comments, unfortunately many of them also hateful: the 27-year-old photographer and model is a perfect fit crasis of masculine and feminine in her sinuous pose, with a medium-long haircut and her delicate facial features: nothing to do with the ultra-masculine imagery of Roman statues, in short. A composition that promptly aroused the intolerance of those to whom a similar shot is deliberately addressed: a reminder of freedom of expression, which is nothing more than a natural offshoot of the freedom to simply exist.
Michael Bailey-Gates’ self-portrait is none other than that, and in its shocking simplicity it conveys personality and self-determination, from the hair on the legs and chest to the male body away from stereotypes about the so-called and now anachronistic virility. A photo that, however ephemeral – as many would mistakenly define it – embodies a great relevance: the need to preserve and defend identity of everyone, especially following the latest, alarming homophobic events that took place in Rome and beyond, which finds fertile ground pending the final approval of the Zan Bill. The message, precisely because it was accompanied by – sadly – expected comments, arrived loud and clear, confirming once again i values carried forward by Pierpaolo Piccioli by Valentino.
