Valerie Bako: Frenchwoman who killed her rapist father and husband collapsed in court

The case of Valerie Bako has shocked her French causing controversy over whether victims should take the law into their own hands. Nearly one million people have signed a petition calling for the charges against her to be dropped.

The mother of four killed her abusive father-in-law and later her husband, who betrayed her to truck drivers. Bako collapsed in court today when a French prosecutor said he should not return to prison if found guilty of murder, according to the Daily Mail.

Valerie Bako, 40, confessed to killing Daniel Polet, who was 25 years her senior and had turned her life into a living hell.. She faces the risk of spending her life in prison if convicted.

The explanation he gave was that he often beat and raped her and forced her into prostitution. “I wanted to save myself and my children,” Bako told the court.

The scenes that unfolded on Friday morning, during the fifth day of her trial, were also dramatic, when Attorney General Eric Zale said the accused “should not return to prison.” He insisted that if Baku was found guilty, it should be punished with five years in prison, four with suspension.

The woman has already spent a year in detention, which means that in that event she would be released immediately.

“We must take into account the personality of the accused, Valerie Bako – a victim all her life”said Zale. Addressing the jurors, he said: “So any sentence you decide must be reduced.”

“The question you have to ask yourself is this: should Valerie Bako return to prison? Obviously not. She has already served a year in pre-trial detention. “

“Premeditated murder is by no means self-defense. It is an intent to kill, premeditated, in its context domestic violence. This court must apply the law. But there are different conditions to consider. “The fact that he was beaten for so long, the fact that he wanted to survive,” the prosecutor added.

Hearing these dramatic words, exhausted Bako felt unwell and her lawyers asked for the hearing to be adjourned.
