Valve has updated the Steam Deck firmware: now the portable PC makes noticeably less noise

Today, May 27, developers from Valve have officially released an update for the SteamOS operating system with an index of 3.2. In this update, users get some interesting improvements like the video game co-op feature, but most of all it is due to the updated software that is responsible for adjusting the operation of the fans in the Steam Deck cooling system. The fact is that literally since the official release, many gamers around the world have complained that the fan of a portable gaming computer makes too much noise even in idle time – some even came up with a solution to the problem with electrical tape.

But it turned out that the problem is not only hardware, but also at the software level. Now the developers from the Valve company have optimized their software, which will now be more reasonable to raise the cooler speed depending on the situation. For example, if the Steam Deck is idle without load, then there should be no noise at all, while in various video games, depending on the situation, the system will automatically adjust the speed of rotation of the blades. True, if it seems to the gamer that the updated optimization algorithm does not work as well as we would like, then it will be possible to switch the fan to the original mode of operation.

And although initially gamers had little faith that such an update could solve the noise problem, in fact it turned out that software optimization worked. Regular users and Western journalists are already publishing their reviews about operating system updates, reporting that the Steam Deck has really become less noisy. The only question is how this will ultimately affect the temperature regime, because if the fan does not spin as fast as necessary, then the computer will simply overheat.
