Vice President JD Vance reiterated on Friday that the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) remains an important alliance for the United States, as the Munich Security Conference began in Germany with the expected Russian war war to be a focal point of discussions.
“Europe is, of course, a very important ally for the US, NATO is a very important military alliance… but we want to make sure it is really built for the future, and part of it is to ensure that the alliance does a little more of sharing charges in Europe so that the United States can focus on some of our challenges in the East Asia, ”said Vance, speaking to reporters alongside NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte.
The comments echo those made by other members of the Trump government in recent days, while management dramatically seeks to reformulate decades of American foreign policy in Europe, warning that the US will not prioritize European security and focus on its own borders and battle against China for the domain.
“Of course we will talk about NATO, particularly about the president’s desire to see the alliance spend a little more resources in defense,” said the vice president.
Vance continued, “Let’s talk, of course, about the Ukraine-Russian conflict and how to take you to a negotiated agreement, and I’m sure we’ll talk about some other areas of cooperation as well.”
The American should meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday morning (14).
Rutte thanked the vice president for the past involvement of Washington with Europe, agreeing that the increase in the sharing of charges “has to be done.”
He added that discussions about the end of the Russian-Ucrania war had to consider how to establish a lasting peace and strengthen Ukraine’s position before negotiations began.
