Fiocruz identified the emergence of a new variant of Ômicron in Amazonas, called BE.9.
Allied to it, the BQ.1 strain has also contributed to the increase in cases in Brazil.
In an interview with CNN Radio virologist and Fiocruz researcher Felipe Naveca stated, however, that “no data is related to an increase in severe cases.”
“However, transmission, yes. These mutations are related to the evasion of antibodies and increased binding in cells, they are more transmissible, but without evidence of being more severe”, he added.
Naveca highlighted that, even so, “we see protection from vaccines, even with the first generation, having protection.”
For this reason, he reinforced the importance of all people seeking the necessary booster doses against Covid-19.
“The concern is in the groups most likely to evolve to a severe form, such as the elderly or immunosuppressed, those with diabetes or hypertension, we appeal to anyone who owes a booster dose to seek it.”
He recalls that there are states that are already studying the implementation of another booster dose, which would be the fifth dose of the vaccination cycle.
