Vasco Brondi: “Only the truth counts”

This year focusing the cameras on the protagonists of the Italian indie scene. Eleven episodes, every Saturday at 8.15 pm on Sky Arte, with eleven different protagonists: Ministri, Motta, Joan Thiele, Fast Animals and Slow Kids, Myss Keta, Francesco Bianconi, Melancholia, Tutti Fenomeni, NAIP, Vasco Brondi, Margherita Vicario.

Eleven different voices, on styles and influences that show eleven different stories and sounds, through the musical story, which becomes almost a documentary. Vasco Brondi is one of these voices who, after decades of experience with The Lights of the power plant and a solo career that began close to a pandemic, brings her songs to the stage live, playing them as in her last summer tour. “I’m glad there is a trace of the tour we did, all live, perfect and flawed and very heartfelt. Do you miss the live shows?
«Actually I just finished a summer tour so I don’t miss them at all, in fact I really needed to stop for a while. Before this tour I missed the stage and the size of the concert very much. It is the moment when I really find the meaning of this strange work. The songs are finally shared and when they come into contact with the air and with other people they create strange chemical reactions, they become something else. In this moment, seeing oneself on the other side of the screens, in the same place at the same time, is very important. The concerts in a secularized society like ours are also our rites, they are important to work together on the things that happen ».

On November 13 he performed at the theater with A spiritual thing. What effect did it have on her?
“It was the first time I went back to a full theater, among other things a wonderful Italian-style theater and, it seems rhetorical, but it always seems the first time. Each time I forget how it is and each time it is amazing. I feel a paradoxical effect in writing songs and singing them opening myself to others, the more I expose myself and the less I feel fragile, the more I open up and the more I feel strong and calm. It is important to share the unshakable. In one of my songs 26000 days I wrote a verse that has become a mantra for me: “We are here to reveal ourselves, not to hide” ».

«In my immersion and distancing myself from music according to the periods I found relief in all those music that were created not for pleasure, not to be sold or to increase fans and to hope to play at the stadium or go on the radio but for other reasons. For parties, for funerals, for celebrations, for no reason. For the reasons why humans have chosen this mysterious form of expression. This is not a concert, it is an exploration between music of various traditions and poems and writings, in which it seemed to me that the earthly and the otherworldly touched each other, the mundane and the mystical made sparks to illuminate something. As a leitmotif are some of my songs and songs by others with protagonists in constant search who seek peace by fidgeting ».

What is important to you right now?
“The truth is important to me. I realized that with songs it could still be possible for me to express myself and get rid of something. I have found that Zen monks do a meditation where they sit in a circle to meditate and have a bell in the center. Anyone who wants can ring the bell and speak, at which point he has the attention of the other monks, but he can only say things that make his voice tremble as he says them, otherwise you can shut up and continue to meditate. And I thought it was also a good way to write songs to tell the truth. When I get stuck, I say to myself “you can tell the truth” and something always happens. The original title Gandhi gave to his autobiography is The story of my experiments with truth. I think even songs should be experiments with truth ».
