Vatican discloses coat, motto and signature of Pope Leo XIV; look

The Vatican released, on Saturday morning (10), the coat of arms, the motto and the official photo of Pope Leo XIV, elected on Thursday (8).

The coat of arms is composed of a shield divided into the diagonal into two parts: the above has a blue background and the symbol of a white lily; Already the bottom, a light background and the image of a closed book on which there is a heart pierced by an arrow – a symbol that refers to the order of St. Augustine.

The combination refers to the experience of conversion of St. Augustine, which he explained with the words “Vulnesti color my verb tuo” (“hurt my heart with your word” in Portuguese).

The remaining traits are the same as Leo XIV already used in his previous coat of arms, chosen at the time of his episcopal consecration – as well as the motto “In Illo Unum”, pronounced by St. Augustine in a sermon to explain that “although we Christians are many, in the only Christ we are one.”

The Pontiff himself explained the choices, in an interview granted in July 2023: “As it follows from my episcopal motto, unity and communion are precisely part of the charisma of the Order of St. Augustine and also my way of acting and thinking. I believe it is very important to promote communion in the church, and we know that communion, participation and mission are the three keywords of the synod,” he said.

“Therefore, as Agostinian, for me, promoting unity and communion is fundamental. St. Augustine talks a lot about unity in the church and about the need to live it,” he concluded.
