Vatican: Special ‘purification service’ at St Peter’s Basilica as man undresses inside temple

A special purification ceremony took place today at the main altar of St. Peter’s Basilica, after being “desecrated” by a man who stood naked inside the church to protest the war in Ukraine.

The service, as required by Canon Law, was performed by the archpriest of the Basilica, Cardinal Mauro Gabetti.

On Thursday, when the temple was closing, a Pole took off his clothes and stood at the altar. On his back was written the slogan: “Save the children of Ukraine».

Vatican guards handed him over to the Italian police. After his arrest, his deportation from Italy was ordered.

In the ceremony, the altar used by Pope Francis was sprinkled with holy water. Gabetti said the Pole committed a sinful and “inappropriate, truly sad act” to draw attention to the victims of war.

A Vatican source said Thursday that the man had self-inflicted wounds on his body with his fingernails. His identity has not been released, but photos posted on social media sites suggest he is around 30 years old.
