The Vatican seems to have changed his position against gender affirmation surgery and “gender theory” last year, raising the possibility of “exceptional situations”.
This week, the Vatican published a speech by the chief of the doctrine, Cardinal Victor Manuel Fernández, where he said: “There are cases out of the norm, such as strong dysphoria that can lead to an unbearable existence or even suicide. These exceptional situations should be evaluated very carefully. ”
The Argentine prelate, speaking of a conference of theology in Colony, Germany, explained: “We do not want to be cruel and say that we do not understand the conditioning of people and the deep suffering that exists in some cases of ‘dysphoria’ that manifests itself since childhood.”
In April last year, the Vatican issued a strong warning against “gender theory” and said that any “sex change intervention” risks threatening a person’s “unique dignity”.
The document, signed by Pope Francis, focused on what he describes as a series of threats to human dignity, including poverty, death penalty, war, assisted death, abortion, sexual abuse and abuse of women.
Last year’s text stated that attempts to obscure “the sexual difference between men and women,” including gender affirmation surgery, must be rejected. “It follows that any intervention of sex change, as a rule, risks threatening the unique dignity that one has received from the moment of conception,” he added at the time.
Although this week’s publication on the Vatican’s website recognizes the possibility of gender dysphoria, it still makes it clear that the church opposes the idea of ”that bodily-sexual identity can be the subject of radical change, always subject to its own desires.”
Pope Francis has received a transgender women community at their general hearings while signing a Vatican document allowing trans people to be godparents.
This happens while the 88 -year -old Pope fights bilateral pneumonia at Gemelli Hospital in Rome, where he has been working since February 14, usually working during the day.
From the hospital, the Pontiff still makes decisions such as summoning a meeting between Pope and Cardinal to decide the causes of holiness at an unspecified date.
