Vehicle registrations rise more than 16% in January 2023, says Fenabrave

January 2023 registered a 16.3% increase in car registrations in Brazil in general, compared to the same month last year, according to Fenabrave — National Federation of Automotive Vehicle Distribution.

In comparison with December 2022, there was a drop of 26.8%. For the President of the entity, Andreta Jr., the seasonality and the conjunctural situation that the country experienced in the first month of last year, explain the differences in the numbers.

“In January 2022, the sector recorded the worst result for the month since 2017, as dealership stocks were low, due to the global supply crisis, in addition to having been a period in which the Ômicron variant of COVID-19 caused great concern in the population”, he points out.

For Andreata Jr., the decrease compared to December 2022 is due to the seasonality of the sector, since at this time there are several expenses such as IPVA, school supplies and IPTU, which end up weighing on the purchase decision of families.

Cars and light commercials

The segments started the year with an increase of 11.86% over the same month of 2022. According to Fenabrave, in January of last year, dealership inventories were very low and, throughout 2022, supply was normalizing.

January 2023 volume was around 15,000 units more than the same month in 2022.

However, compared to December 2022, January of this year showed a 35.47% drop in registrations in this segment.

Electrified cars and light commercial vehicles

Despite the low base of comparison (in January 2022, only 2,558 electrified cars and light commercial vehicles were licensed), the segments should maintain growth throughout the year.

“Even with the seasonality that impacts the entire sector, the volume of registrations was close to the annual average for 2022. In addition, there has been an increase not only in demand, but in the supply of electrified vehicles in recent months, as several automakers have expanded their portfolios of hybrid and electric options”, says Andreta Jr.

The registrations of these segments in January of this year were 76.04% higher than January 2022. Comparing with December of last year, there was a drop of 19.40%.

trucks and buses

Trucks hold the same logic as other vehicles. Comparing January of this year with January of last year, the increase in registrations was 20.08%. From December 2022 to January 2023, there was a drop of 15.33%.

Buses also recorded an increase comparing January 2023 with 2022: a 61.32% increase in license plates. Comparing December 2023 with January this year, the drop was 19.7%.

Tractors and agricultural machines

The segment closed 2022 with one of the highest increases in the entire sector, growing 19.4%. “In the year, more than 67,000 units were sold, which shows that entrepreneurs continue to modernize their equipment fleet and put Brazilian agribusiness in tune with the most advanced technologies for use in the field in the world”, says Andreta Jr.

motorcycles

With a tendency to maintain evolution in registrations, the segment surpassed 110 thousand units in January. Compared to the same month of 2022, the increase was 23.23%, but compared to December last year, the decrease was 16.37%.

Electric registered an increase of 31.18% in the comparison of January 2023 and 2022, but had a decrease of 29.28% comparing the first month of 2023 with the last month of 2022.
