Venezuela denies permission for opponents to leave the country

Venezuela will not grant safe passage for the six opposition advisors who took refuge in the Argentine embassy in Caracas to leave the country, an official from Nicolás Maduro's party said on Wednesday night (15).

Senior Argentine government advisers told Reuters this month that the Miraflores Palace had abandoned promises made in April to allow advisers to leave. The opposition says Maduro is pursuing political rivals in the months leading up to July's presidential elections.

The government of Argentina's right-wing libertarian president Javier Milei – who recently exchanged accusations with Maduro – will increase pressure on the issue, official sources said, adding that the six advisors are in danger if they do not leave the country.

“Pressure? They will not pressure us,” said Diosdado Cabello, the number two in command of Venezuela’s ruling socialist party, on his weekly television program.

“Today, I think the answer came from the Venezuelan government: no. There is no safe passage for anyone who doesn’t love this country,” said Cabello.

Advisors to Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado requested asylum in March after the Attorney General's Office announced arrest warrants for them for conspiracy.

Machado, who denied any accusations of misconduct by his team, left the presidential race after being considered ineligible by Venezuelan courts.

She continues to campaign on behalf of the candidate representing the opposition, Edmundo Gonzalez.
