“Venezuela is at a critical point,” says UN High Commissioner for Human Rights

Volker Türk, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, said on Tuesday (30) that Venezuela “is at a critical point” and asked authorities to allow peaceful protests.

“I am deeply concerned about the rising tensions in Venezuela, with worrying reports of violence since last Sunday’s elections,” Türk said in a statement released by the United Nations Human Rights Council.

“I am alarmed by reports of disproportionate use of force by law enforcement officials, coupled with violence by armed government-supporting individuals known as colectivos,” he added.

Türk concluded: “Venezuela is at a critical point. I urge the authorities to respect the right of all Venezuelans to assemble and protest peacefully and to express their views freely and without fear.”
