Venezuelan Attorney General Tarek William Saab announced on Tuesday (24) that he has requested the inclusion of Argentine President Javier Milei on the red list of wanted persons of the International Criminal Police Organization, Interpol.
“The request has been sent, we will see how Interpol will act,” said Saab, in a press conference, showing the document that formalizes the request, which also asks for the issuance of red notices against the sister and secretary general of the Argentine president, Karina Milei, and the Argentine Security Minister, Patricia Bullrich.
Red notices are requests to police around the world to locate and pre-arrest people, at the request of Interpol member countries.
The Venezuelan request was sent to Interpol on the same day that the country’s Supreme Court of Justice issued an arrest warrant against Milei and her ministers for “aggravated robbery,” among other crimes, for the delivery to the United States of a Boeing 747 belonging to the Venezuelan state-owned company Emtrasur, and for the detention of its crew, who were later released.
The Venezuelan aircraft, which was held at Ezeiza airport in Greater Buenos Aires for almost two years, belonged, according to the Americans, to the Iranian company Mahan Air, the target of US sanctions for alleged links with the Quds Force of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, which the country’s Department of Justice describes as a “terrorist organization”.
At the time, Venezuela accused Argentina and the United States of promoting a “blatant theft” of the aircraft. In response, it banned Argentine aircraft from flying over its airspace. The Venezuelan aircraft was eventually destroyed in the United States.
Arrest warrants
On the same day that the Venezuelan Judiciary issued the arrest warrant against Milei, the Federal Court of Argentina ordered the immediate arrest of the President of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, and the Minister of the Interior, Justice and Peace, Diosdado Cabello, for an investigation into crimes against humanity in Venezuela.
The investigation began after a complaint filed last year by victims’ families, the Clooney Foundation for Justice and the Argentine Forum for the Defense of Democracy (FADD).
Last week, the Milei government asked the International Criminal Court (ICC) to issue arrest warrants for Maduro and other members of the Venezuelan government, considering that there is sufficient evidence of the alleged commission of crimes against humanity in the country.
