The government of Nicolás Maduro said this Saturday (7) that it decided to revoke Brazilian custody of the Argentine embassy in Caracas because it has “evidence” that the facility is being used to plan “terrorist activities” and “assassination attempts” against Maduro and Vice President Delcy Rodríguez.
“Venezuela was forced to make this decision motivated by the evidence it has regarding the use of the facilities of this diplomatic mission for the planning of terrorist activities and assassination attempts on Nicolás Maduro and Vice President Delcy Rodriguez by fugitives from Venezuelan justice who remain within it,” the Venezuelan Foreign Ministry wrote in a statement.
The statement refers to the six members of opposition leader María Corina Machado’s team who have been seeking asylum in the Argentine embassy in Caracas since March, after arrest warrants were issued against them.
Despite attempts by Argentine Chancellor Diana Mondino, the Maduro government has not granted safe conduct for opponents to leave Venezuela.
The Venezuelan Foreign Ministry reports that it has taken the decision to “immediately” revoke the authorization for the Brazilian government to assume the representation of Argentine interests in its territory, as well as the custody of the premises of its diplomatic mission, including its assets and archives.
Venezuela formally notified Brazil of its decision to withdraw authorization for Brazil to take care of Argentine facilities on Saturday morning (7). Brazil responded officially by stating the need to designate a replacement country before ceasing to exercise this function.
The Itamaraty’s position is that Brazil will only stop representing Argentine interests when the foreign ministries of Argentina and Venezuela reach an agreement to designate a new nation to do so.
Brazil assumed the representation of Argentine interests in the country at the beginning of August, after Venezuela expelled Javier Milei’s diplomatic corps from the country, due to allegations of fraud in the elections.
The main concern is for the six opposition members who are taking refuge in the Argentine embassy residence in Caracas. On Friday night, they posted videos of a police siege in front of the building.
On Saturday morning (7), they were still posting videos of police officers and patrol cars on the scene on social media. “The electricity is out and access to the embassy is occupied,” wrote Magalli Meda, a member of the team of opposition candidate María Corina Machado.
“This is how the Argentine embassy in Caracas dawns, surrounded by regime agents, hooded and armed,” wrote the campaign of then presidential candidate Edmundo González.
Opponents also report that police are preventing journalists from accessing the street, even though it is not blocked.
