«Uncle Juan», as he was known to everyone, was born on May 27, 1909. The oldest man in the world died where he had always lived, in the Andean state of Táchira (on the border with Colombia), a mountainous area, where he worked in the fields for more than 50 years. “At the age of five, he began working with his father and brothers in agriculture and collaborated in harvesting sugar cane and coffee,” is written in a note from Guinness World Records. As an adult he also served as sheriff in his hometown of Caricuena.
He married Ediofina García, who died in 1997 after 60 years of marriage, and had 11 children, 18 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren.

The oldest person in the world is a woman and is 117 years old
At the moment the oldest living person in the world is Maria Branyas, who enjoys health that would be the envy of anyone half his age. She was born on March 4, 1907 and has just turned 117 years old. She has some difficulty walking and feels little or nothing, but she has never been in an operating room and, unlike most people her age, she has no cardiovascular problems. Maria Branyas is also a mystery to longevity experts, who therefore decided to study its characteristics to learn its secrets and develop new treatments for diseases.
His is an “incredible” case for Manel Esteller, director of the Josep Carreras Leukemia Research Institute and professor of genetics at the University of Barcelona. The doctor took DNA samples – including saliva, urine and blood – from the centenarian, whom he visited in the nursing home in Olot, Girona, in northern Spain, where he lives. Manel Esteller, one of the world's leading experts in the field of genetics, wants to find out to what extent Mrs. Branyas' genes can explain her longevity and how much her good health has to do with lifestyle her.
