Venezuela: US sanctions in effect – US does not consider Maduro legitimate president

The United States of America confirmed that they still do not consider him Nicolas Maduro its legal president Venezuela and that they recognize the parliament elected in 2015.

Last week, Venezuela’s opposition announced it was abolishing the “transitional” presidency of Juan Guaido, who had been recognized by the US and many European countries as the legitimate president..

“Our attitude towards Nicolas Maduro has not changed. He is not the legitimate leader of Venezuela. We recognize the National Assembly of 2015, the only democratically elected institution”State Department spokesman Ned Price told the press.

Washington believes that the assets of the Venezuelan government in the US, including those of state oil company PDVSA, should remain under the control of the 2015 parliament. This is because it believes the 2020 parliamentary elections, which it won, were rigged. Maduro.

“The regime of sanctions and restrictions against Venezuela remains in force”Price added. “From what I understand, members of parliament are discussing how to control (the country’s) assets abroad,” which are estimated at $24 billionconcluded.

Having failed to oust Maduro, the deputies of the old parliament on Friday put an end to the “temporary” presidency and the government of Guaido, who, however, had no real power. This vote came at a time when the opposition appears divided, having failed to unite for the 2021 regional elections won by Maduro’s camp and while 2024 is a presidential election year for Venezuela.
