Venezuela will allow opposition advisors to leave for Argentina, sources say

The Venezuelan government will allow six advisors to opposition leader María Corina Machado to travel safely to Argentina, a government source told Reuters this Friday (5).

The aides – including campaign manager Magalli Meda, previously touted as a possible replacement for Machado in this year's presidential election – sought protection at the Argentine embassy in Caracas in March after the attorney general's office announced arrest warrants for them.

An opposition source said they were aware of the efforts but did not share further details.

“We granted safe passage to these six people. We are waiting for Argentina to take them to Buenos Aires,” said the government source. “The Venezuelan government extraordinary allowed them to leave the country for humanitarian reasons.”

Although the aides will be allowed to leave, the criminal case against them will remain, they added.

Venezuela's Attorney General Tarek Saab said in March that two people close to Machado had been arrested, while seven other members of his team had warrants for their arrest.

The arrests and warrants were for alleged involvement in planned conspiracies, according to Saab.

Machado denies any allegations of misconduct by his team.
