“Further checks discovered an adult woman who was holding a baby that she indicated was bleeding,” the statement said, adding that the woman was taken to a local health facility. “Unfortunately, the baby was found unresponsive.”

Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister Keith Rowley said he spoke with Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodríguez about the incident and looks forward to better future cooperation between the Trinidad Coast Guard and the Venezuelan National Guard.

“I expressed my deepest condolences on my own behalf and that of all the people of Trinidad and Tobago regarding the unfortunate loss of the baby’s life,” Rowley said in a statement Sunday night.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Venezuela expressed in a statement “its deepest regret and rejection of the incident” and urged Trinidad “to carry out a thorough investigation to clarify the facts surrounding this fatal incident”.
