Venezuela’s former opposition presidential candidate Edmundo Gonzalez has fled to Spain after being granted asylum in the Iberian country, disappointing those who had pinned their hopes on the 75-year-old politician to end two decades of one-party rule. According to the Associated Press, the sudden departure of the man who the Venezuelan opposition and many foreign governments consider the rightful winner of July’s presidential race was announced late Saturday by Venezuela’s vice president, Delci Rodriguez.
