Venezuelan President Maduro strengthens relations with Qatar

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro met today with Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, the emir of Qatar, the gas-rich Gulf state with which he wants to develop relations, as part of his regional tour.

The two heads of state discussed the “development of friendly relations and the prospects of mutual cooperation” between the two countries, “specifically in the fields of energy, economy, investment, agriculture and tourism,” the official Qatari news agency said. QNA.

“We are discussing prospects for strengthening cooperation between our two countries in various fields for the good and interest of our two peoples,” the Emir of Qatar said on Twitter.

“From Qatar, we are working to build a co-operation map for the well-being of the Venezuelan people and for the union and brotherhood between the countries,” Maduro told the same social media site.

Maduro is expected to stay in the emirate for two days, according to diplomatic sources.

During his diplomatic tour, Maduro has already visited Turkey, Algeria, Kuwait and Iran.

In Tehran, Maduro signed a 20-year co-operation agreement to strengthen the alliance between the two countries against a common rival, the United States.

Iran and Venezuela, members of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, are both subject to US sanctions.

Qatar is a great ally of the United States. But in 2014, Maduro said that Qatari banks were helping his country by lending significant loans when Venezuela’s oil-dependent economy was in free fall.
