The National Union of Press Workers of Venezuela (SNTP) denounced this Sunday (25) the arrest of journalist Carmela Longo after officers of the Bolivarian National Police raided her home in Caracas.
Longo, according to the union report, was arrested along with her son and the reasons for her arrest are not yet known.
CNN requested information about the case from the Venezuelan Public Prosecutor’s Office and is awaiting a response.
Carmela Longo is an entertainment journalist with several decades of experience. Last Thursday (22), she posted on Instagram that she was fired from Grupo Últimas Notícias, a media outlet where she worked for almost 20 years.
Since the presidential elections on July 28, more than 1.5 million people have been detained during opposition protests challenging the election result. The survey was conducted by the non-governmental organization Penal Forum, which said that only 90 people were released.
