Venezuelan Supreme Court places election records under seal

Venezuela’s Supreme Court of Justice ruled on Thursday (22) that all electoral material submitted by the National Electoral Council (CNE) and parties to the Court must remain under the protection of the courts. In practice, this means that the minutes of the July 28 election will not be released.

Before confirming President Nicolás Maduro’s victory, without giving details, the president of the court, Caryslia Rodriguez, stated: “as a result, it was decided that all electoral material provided by the CNE and the political parties would fall under the protection of this Electoral Room.”

On August 5, the CNE delivered, at the court’s request, the minutes of the scrutiny of the electoral tables at the national level, the minutes of the final tally of the electoral process, the minutes of the trial and the proclamation of the elections.

When reading the sentence, Rodriguez highlighted that the opposition candidate, Edmundo González, did not appear at any stage of the Court’s investigation process, having contempt of court.
