Venezuelan users of the popular MetaMask cryptocurrency wallet have reported that they cannot access the program. Access was later restored.
The first complaints about the inaccessibility of the wallet in Venezuela appeared on Wednesday evening, on Thursday morning there were much more. Presumably, the problem arose due to the Infura infrastructure network, whose API uses MetaMask. Later, a note appeared on the wallet support website stating that “MetaMask and Infura are no longer available in certain jurisdictions due to regulatory restrictions.”
This morning representatives of Infura in the official Twitter account wrotethat the lock was erroneous:
“We fixed an issue that many users were experiencing. During a reconfiguration to comply with new US and other sanctions, we accidentally set the locks to be wider than necessary. This was our oversight and we are grateful that it was pointed out to us. Once we understood what had happened, we were able to fix the problem and get access back.”
Recall that the MetaMask wallet is preparing to release its own token. However, ConsenSys COO Jacob Cantele believes that users will not be able to get rich on the distribution of tokens.
