Venezuela’s National Electoral Council (CNE) reported on Monday (26), without presenting evidence, that its website was the target of a cyber attack, which again affected user access, just a few hours after it returned to the air, after a month offline.
This new attack, according to the CNE, occurred “against the dissemination centers, where the official website is hosted,” reported the state broadcaster VTV.
“This incident has been technically identified as a denial of service attack, the aim of which is to saturate telecommunications links to affect access to the website,” VTV added.
According to the state broadcaster, the attack originated from “IP addresses located abroad, which indicates that it was a targeted attack from outside the country.”
The broadcaster also reported that the technical team is already working to restore access to the site.
THE CNN is trying to obtain more details of the incident from the CNE.
The complaint comes after the website returned to the air almost a month after the presidential elections on July 28 and without containing the results of the dispute.
The website had remained offline after the election. While electoral authorities have not spoken directly about the website, they have said that the CNE was the target of cyberattacks, although they have not publicly provided evidence.
On Monday, the electoral authority said in a statement that it would publish the election results in compliance with a ruling by the Electoral Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ), which validated the announced results that gave victory to President Nicolás Maduro and which have been contested by the opposition and most of the international community.
Both the CNE and the Court are led by officials aligned with Chavismo.
