Venezuela’s Supreme Court ratifies decision that validated Maduro’s victory

The Constitutional Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ) of Venezuela ratified on Friday (11) the decision of the Electoral Chamber that validated, in August, the proclamation of Nicolás Maduro as the winner of the presidential elections by the National Electoral Council (CNE).

The decision, published on the court’s website, considers that the Electoral Chamber “collected and examined all the necessary evidence in accordance with the facts and the law, including an exhaustive, detailed and complete expertise” and that, as a result, “the unquestionable integrity of the results announced by the National Electoral Council”.

Both the CNE and the TSJ are made up of people related to the party in power.

The Electoral Chamber’s decision was challenged by Enrique Márquez, from the Centrados party, who in mid-September said he would ask the Constitutional Chamber to annul the resolution.

On Friday, after the release of the Constitutional Chamber’s ruling, Márquez announced on his X account that he will comment on this decision on Monday (14).

Opposition questions results

Both Márquez and the Unitary Democratic Platform (PUD), which brings together the majority opposition and which nominated Edmundo González Urrutia as the candidate who contested the elections against Maduro, question the results that the CNE announced on the night of July 28.

The Venezuelan opposition claims that the real winner of the elections was González Urrutia, citing minutes from polling centers and stations that were in their possession (close to 80% of the total), obtained through their electoral witnesses.

The minutes would reveal that González received 67% of the vote.

Observer organizations such as the Carter Center and several countries are calling for the publication of detailed results by voting centers and polling stations, something that has not happened even two months after the elections.

On the other hand, Maduro and his allies maintain that his victory was clear and that he will begin a new term on January 10, and reject criticism from abroad on the grounds that they constitute an interference in Venezuela’s sovereignty.
