The official line-up will be announced at the end of July but, after the confirmation of Dune by Denis Villeneuve and the hypothetical landing of Spencer by Pablo Larraín, the Venice Film Festival finally announces what the opening film of the 78th edition will be, starting at the Lido from 1st to 11th September: it’s about Parallel mothers, the new film directed by Pedro Almodóvar with Penelope Cruz, Milena Smit, Israel Elejalde, Aitana Sánchez-Gijón and with the participation of Julieta Serrano and Rossy De Palma who will participate in the competition exhibition.
The film, which will be distributed in Italy by Warner Bros. Pictures., Tells the story of life of two single women, Janis and Ana, who share the same hospital room before giving birth. For both, the pregnancy is not planned: Janis, the eldest, believes she has no regrets and that the baby will be a turning point in her life, while Ana, the youngest, is scared, convinced that she will not be able to do it.
«I was born as a director in Venice in 1983 – said Pedro Almodóvar – in the Mezzogiorno Mezzanotte section. Thirty-eight years later I am called to inaugurate the exhibition. I cannot express the joy, the honor and how much this represents for me without falling into complacency. I am very grateful to the festival for this recognition and I hope to be up to it “added the director, who returns to the Festival one year after The Human Voice, the short film with Tilda Swinton based on the play of the same name by Jean Cocteau, and two by Pain and glory, perhaps his most intimate and personal film, presented in competition at the Cannes Film Festival.
“I am grateful to Pedro Almodóvar for offering us the privilege of opening the Venice Film Festival with his new film, intense and sensitive portrait of two women who measure themselves with the themes of motherhood with unpredictable implications, of female solidarity, of a sexuality lived in full freedom and without hypocrisy, against the background of a reflection on the inescapable need for truth, to be pursued without hesitation. A very welcome return to Venice in Competition for our Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement in 2019, many years after the success of Women on the verge of a nervous breakdown, which marked its definitive affirmation in the international arena ». Parallel mothers will be screened on Wednesday 1 September 2021 in the Sala Grande of the Palazzo del Cinema on the opening night of the Festival.
