Venice 78: from “Spencer” with Kristen Stewart to “It was the hand of God” by Sorrentino, here are the films we will see

Glittering and Hollywood Venice, full of stars and green passes. For the second year in a row, the Venice Film Festival is not giving up on the pandemic but, on the contrary, is increasing with an absolutely ambitious program, capable of satisfying all tastes while respecting the safety rules provided for the containment: from the halving of the seats in the room to the access control, from the compulsory reservation to the green pass essential to access the micro-cosmos of the Lido which, from 1st to 11th September, it will light up, bringing back the splendor of past years to Venice.

If the Cannes Film Festival has chosen a more intimate and discreet life, focusing on the presence of many French titles and almost completely excluding Hollywood from the Croisette, Alberto barbera has decided to start again in the name of great productions and blockbusters, without giving up the auteur film and the representation of the countries in the world that this year will be 59 in Venice. “Last edition we were under the illusion that it was the beginning of normality, but this was not the case. In the meantime, we worked throughout the year to select the films, which were a lot considering that those of 2020 and 2021 were added together “explained Barbera during the press conference to present the titles, emphasizing on a greater Italian presence among the films in competition (there are 5) and putting our hands on the female directors who were 8 last year and 5 this year (“There is a small setback, but the long slowdown certainly weighed on the female component” .

Let’s come, however, to the films. Venice 78 will be opened, as we know, Parallel Mothers say Pedro Almodóvar, who returns to competition at the Lido 33 years after the last time (it was 1988). The film will have as protagonist Penelope Cruz, who this year in Venice will double with Official Competition, also in competition, by the Argentines Gaston Duprat and Mariano Cohn, finding their friend Antonio Banderas: a film about the narcissism of actors and directors supported by a brilliant and colorful screenplay. Also in competition we find the highly anticipated The Power of the Dog by Jane Campion, the first woman to win the Palme d’Or in Cannes history, with a great Benedict Cumberbatch and Kirsten Dunst; Sundown by Michel Franco with Tim Roth and Charlotte Gainsbourg and, above all, Spencer, the new film by Pablo Larraín with Kristen Stewart in the role of Lady Diana. The film, whose presence in Venice had been anticipated in recent weeks by Variety, will tell about the weekend that led the princess to decide to divorce Prince Charles. Great expectation, however, also for The Lost Daughter, the first film directed by actress Maggie Gyllenhaal – who this year was among the Cannes jurors – with Olivia Colman, Dakota Johnson and Alba Rohrwacher: the film is based on the novel The dark daughter from Elena Ferrante, inaugurating a year that will also welcome the third season ofBrilliant friend, scheduled on Raiuno in 2022, and The lying life of adults, the series based on his latest novel produced by Netflix, which will start shooting in Naples in September.

Among the Italians, great titles such as It was the hand of god, the new film by Paolo Sorrentino with Filippo Scotti, Toni Servillo and Luisa Ranieri dedicated to his life (we will see it on Netflix); America latina, the film by Damiano and Fabio D’Innocenzo which will see Elio Germano as the absolute protagonist; Here I laugh, Mario Martone’s film again with Servillo, Maria Nazionale and Eduardo Scarpetta dedicated to the life of Scarpetta; The hole, by Michelangelo Frammentino with Nicola Lanza; And Freaks Out, the second work by Gabriele Mainetti which remained pending for a year (it should have been released at the cinema at Christmas 2020) and which promises to be a very ambitious work, full of special effects and with a cast ranging from Claudio Santamaria to Pietro Castellitto, from Giorgio Tirabassi to Aurora Giovinazzo. Besides Mona Lisa and he blood moon by Ana Lily Amirpour with Kate Hudson and Jeon Jong-seo, funky portrait of a New Orleans girl with strange powers, and Lost Illusion by Xavier Giannoli with Cecile de France, Xavier Dolan and Gerard Depardieu, based on the novel by Balzac, the Venice Film Festival is enriched with the titles presented in the other sections, from Biennale College Cinema to Orizzonti up to the Out of Competition.

Among these they certainly stand out Dune, the colossal Denis Villeneuve with Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson and Javier Bardem, and The Last Duel, Ridley Scott’s new movie – House of Gucci with Lady Gaga, for the record, it’s not over yet – with Matt Damon, Adam Driver, Jodie Comer and Ben Affleck bringing Disney back to Venice after so many years. Wondering if Affleck will hit the red carpet with Jennifer Lopez, already giving us the queen couple of this exhibition, we also look forward to it The Catholic school by Stefano Mordini, based on the novel that won the Premio Strega di Albinati (in the cast Benedetta Porcaroli, Jasmine Trinca, Valentina Cervi and the former couple Valeria Golino and Riccardo Scamarcio), Last Night in Soho by Edgar Wright, who will see the “chess queen” Anya Taylor-Joy try her hand at the musical, and The hidden child by Roberto Andò con Silvio Orlando in the role of a music professor who forms an unusual friendship with a runaway teenager. Orlando will also be present in Ariaferma by Leonardo Di Costanzo, a film shot in a real Sardinian prison that will tell the relationship between the head of the prison guards played by Toni Servillo and, in fact, a prisoner with the face of Orlando. Among other titles, great curiosity also for The peacock’s paradise by Laura Bispuri, at his first time in Venice (in the cast Alba Rohrwacher and Maya Sansa); Full time by Eric Gravel starring the Call my agent! Laure Calamy; You-Oh, the only animated film of the Festival, by the Japanese Yuasa Masaaki, e The promises by Thomad Kruithof with Isabelle Huppert, the first film to be screened at the Lido this year.

We close with a series of goodies such as Italian Atlantis by Yuri Ancarani, shot in Venice and dedicated to young lagoons; the documentary Ezio Bosso – The things that remain by Giorgio Verdelli; the thirteenth chapter of the Halloween saga, Halloween Kills, with Jamie Lee Curtis which will also be awarded with the Lion for Lifetime Achievement; The girl who flew by Wilma Labate – the screenplay is written by the D’Innocenzo brothers – and to the curious The 7 days of Bergamo by Simona Ventura. Last, but certainly not least, the preview of the first television series of this exhibition: it is Scenes from a marriage, Hagai Levi’s HBO miniseries inspired by Ingmar Bergman’s film of the same name with Jessica Chastain e Oscar Isaac in the roles that were of Liv Ullmann and Erland Josephson. In short, a great program for a great Film Festival.
