Venice, Historical Regatta: female rowers paid less than men

There is no gender equality among rowers, in the Historical Regatta of Venice. The wages of women, in fact, are lower and, in the clash in the City Council between those who asked to close the gap and those who, instead, wanted the sums to remain unchanged, the latter prevailed. The Historical Regatta, held annually in the Grand Canal, is a reenactment that will be held on September 5th. But, for a long time, women who participate, both as organizers and rowers, have been paid less.

The Democratic Party has tried to introduce two amendments who proposed to allocate 7300 euros to the rowers, to raise the competition prize and respect gender equality on the economic front. But the proposal, after a heated discussion, was rejected. According to one of the councilors, a Northern League expert with delegation to traditions and expert in Venetian rowing, “it is not up to us to decide, the regatta’s assembly is the appointed body. The task of the Municipality is to fix the prize money ».

«The majority rejected our amendment which asked for the equalization of prizes between men and women for the historic regatta in Venice. It was a symbolic amendment of extraordinary significance, ”explained Dem Councilor Monica Sambo, signatory of the rejected amendment. «In particular in Venice, in particular this year for the celebrations of the 1600th anniversary of the first. We could demonstrate that equality can be done and that it can start from the public, because we remember that the prizes of the Historical Regatta are paid with the money of the municipality of Venice and with the municipal tenders ».

And again: «We believe it was a serious mistake. We could really send an extraordinary message to the world precisely on gender equality that is very often declared, but then in fact when there is the possibility of achieving it, it is not done. As in this case. The claims of those who have even defined this anti-democratic proposal are serious. It is a proposal that we have been making for some years, after almost 70 years of work and participation in women’s regattas. We believe that it is absolutely essential and that it is now a battle of civilizations to equalize the prizes».
