Venice with limited numbers from 2022: turnstiles and checks on who enters

From 2022 Venice will have a “limited number”, with entrances regulated by turnstiles positioned in strategic points of the city, access with the app only for those who have booked and for a fee (with the exclusion of residents, students, commuters, Venetians and other categories). A resolution expected by many, and seen by others as the definitive confirmation that Venice is no longer a city but a real “amusement park”. What is certain is that – even if we have not returned to the chilling limit of 110 thousand average visitors per day reached in 2019 – also in this summer post covid the numbers in the city are starting to rise again, with peaks of 85,000 visitors on 5 August and 80,000 on 18. There are many Italians in the city, but also Germans, French, Austrians and Spaniards, although there are still no important markets for international tourism in the city, from the Americans to the Russians to the Chinese.

The turnstiles – the first could be tested in operation as early as September at the Tronchetto – will be high tech: just bring your mobile phone with booking and payment or smartcard to be admitted into the city. Just as it happens to access the gate at the airport, or the museum. But not only: as reported by the Courier service, an army of 500 high-definition cameras will monitor every corner of the city, while connecting smartphones to the cells will check who is in Venice. A scenario managed by a “Smart control room” which, like a disturbing Big Brother, seems to transform the city into the set of Truman Show.

The decision of the Municipality of Venice, already announced by the mayor Luigi Brugnaro in July he raised harsh criticism from the parent company Pd of the Municipality of Venice Monica Sambo: «The Municipality has received countless state resources for the management and planning of tourism. Just remember the 10 million of the Pact for Venice. Unfortunately, the Brugnaro junta has decided to allocate these funds for other functions that cannot be shared, such as the millions of euros diverted to the Boat Show “, he said” and here is the return of the turnstiles, which do not really limit arrivals – he concludes – and which are in fact absolutely useless “.
