Strabismus of Venus, we all know it but few know exactly what it originates from, if can be annoying or can be remedied. The popular name was coined to describe the light forms of squint, able to give the gaze of those affected by it a plus of charm. The expression derives from what would have been the first woman in history, indeed in mythology, to bewitch anyone who observed her, also thanks to her slightly divergent eyes: Venus.
According to legends, the goddess of beauty and love had a look that enchanted and emanated sensuality, despite (or precisely because of) this slight squint.
Today, not a few are the women of the show who “suffer” from Kate Moss a Emily Blunt, da Lucy Liu a Scarlett Johansson: even if in many cases it has contributed in part to decree its success, we always remember that Venus strabismus remains a pathology and as such can cause annoyances and disturbances. Bewitching effects aside, where does this condition come from? “The causes may be different: the most common is that of one dysfunction affecting the eye muscles. In other situations, however, Venus squint can be traced back to one high degree myopia, i.e. a visual defect that in the development phase causes a progressive deviation in the ocular phoria (vision defect in which the eye tends to deviate from the normal position in binocular vision, ed) », Explains Dr. Gaetano Cupo, Ophthalmologist of Top Doctors, a company specializing in technological services for private healthcare.
“Unlike the more severe forms of squint, Venus squint is commonly asymmetrical, that is, it affects only one eye and causes the deviated eye to turn the pupil slightly outwards with respect to the axis of the face. The eyes are in such a condition that the pupils do not appear perfectly aligned », continues the expert. Being a mild form of squint, i however, possible inconveniences are limited, and usually it is not necessary to intervene to correct the defect. «The main symptoms of Venus squint are constituted by a not perfectly symmetrical gaze: this minimal deviation may not interfere with the visual capacity because the retina and the brain are able to compensate for this minimal anatomical deviation. Precisely for this reason and, considering the extremely fascinating aspect of this physical condition, the problem does not require any optical or surgical correction, as it happens for other more serious forms of strabismus »concludes Dr. Cupo.
