Winter 2024 began as usual in much of Brazil, with two cold waves that brought temperatures down. However, starting this Friday (18), temperatures are expected to rise, with the passage of a mass of hot air in the central part of the country, according to Climatempo. The movement will last until at least next Thursday, July 25.
Known by experts as “veranico”, this phenomenon causes higher temperatures in the afternoon, contrasting with mild weather at nightfall and during the early morning hours. It also helps to stabilize temperatures, driving away rain clouds and forming an “atmospheric blockade” against the advance of cold fronts towards the central regions of Brazil.
This is what the city of São Paulo has been experiencing in recent days: the temperature range this week has been high, with a minimum of 13ºC and a maximum of 25ºC. According to the City Hall’s Climate Emergency Management Center (CGE), the capital is experiencing a period of stable weather conditions. And this should continue in the coming days.
“The next few days will be sunny with clouds and temperatures will gradually rise in the afternoons, but the early mornings should still be cold,” says the CGE. “In the late afternoon, cloudiness will increase with the arrival of the sea breeze, but there is no chance of rain for Greater São Paulo.”
This Friday, the municipal body predicts a variation between 13ºC and 24ºC.
Which regions of Brazil will experience the highest temperatures?
According to Climatempo, the Brazilian regions that will have higher than normal temperatures for this time of year range from the extreme south of Rondônia, the southern half of Mato Grosso, Goiás and Minas Gerais and the entire state of Rio de Janeiro, to the end of Rio Grande do Sul, with the exception of the coastal strip from São Paulo to RS, where the sea breeze favors milder weather even in the afternoon.
The western strip, further inland from the states of Mato Grosso do Sul, Paraná, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul, will have the highest temperatures, 5ºC to 7ºC above what is expected for this time of year. The other areas mentioned should have temperatures between 3ºC and 5ºC above normal.
Check out some minimums and maximums for next week:
- Porto Alegre (RS): minimum of 14ºC and maximum of 24ºC;
- Curitiba (PR): minimum of 10ºC and maximum of 24º;
- Campo Grande (MS): minimum of 17ºC and maximum of 32ºC;
- Rio de Janeiro (RJ): minimum of 18ºC and maximum of 27ºC;
- Belo Horizonte (MG): minimum of 14ºC and maximum of 26ºC
