Versailles: Reciprocity clause recalled in EU

Insecurity in the face of Russian aggression has once again highlighted the EU Treaty on Mutual Assistance in the event of an armed attack by a Member State.

Versailles: Reciprocity clause recalled in EU

The strengthening of the EU’s military capabilities, so that in the future, in parallel with NATO, it can meet the challenges and protect the citizens, is expected to be confirmed today in the statement of the Versailles European Council by the 27 European leaders.

Another very important event in relation to the protection of the Member States is the highlighting and reminder in today’s declaration of Article 42 (7) of the EU Treaty, which concerns the mutual assistance of all countries with all the means at their disposal, in the event of an armed attack by a Member State.

The clarification of the above article, which has been a constant Greek pursuit in recent years, was facilitated by the fact that it was requested by other countries, such as Sweden and Finland, which feel insecure due to Russian aggression. In fact, the prime ministers of the two countries had sent a letter to the President of the European Council Charles Michel, asking for protection from the EU in case of an armed attack. The two countries wanted to highlight Article 42 (7) because they are not members of NATO and therefore can not invoke the corresponding article of the alliance in the event of an armed attack against them.

EU: Defense spending is rising

With regard to European defense, European leaders have agreed to substantially increase defense spending, with a significant share of investment, focusing on identified strategic shortcomings. In this context, measures will be taken to promote the European defense industry. They also agreed that the EU should be better prepared to deal with rapidly emerging challenges, such as the ongoing hybrid war, to protect critical infrastructure and to strengthen its cyber resilience.
