Very close to an agreement for Athens – New York flights all year round, the AIA with Delta

Of Foti Foteinou

Athens Airport is very close to an important agreement, as Delta is seriously considering extending the direct Athens-New York (JFK) flight in winter as well.

The next three weeks are considered particularly crucial, although the fact that Delta has already “opened” the bookings for the months January – March 2023 reveals the maturation of the relevant negotiations and a possible positive outcome.

If the agreement succeeds, Athens will be connected to New York all year round with two companies: Emirates flying to Newark Airport and Delta to JFK.

The importance of the US market for Athens Airport

The US market is very important for Athens Airport. It is indicative that in the record year for AIA, in 2019, the American market was the 1st “tank” of international passengers, with almost 700,000 passengers, with a second and by a significant difference, that of the United Kingdom.

However, in 2021, the year in which Athens Airport recovered almost 50% of the traffic of 2019, the American market was the second largest “tank” of international passengers, with almost 300,000 passengers, despite the ban on flights to and from the United States for long time.

For this year, the planned seats are 30% higher than the 2019 seats, following the support actions of Delta Airlines, American Airlines and United Airlines.

Direct flights Athens – Boston after almost 25 years

Yesterday Delta inaugurated the new route Athens – Boston (Logan airport). Boston was directly connected to Athens after almost 25 years.

The atmosphere was festive, both at the airport in Athens and Boston. In fact, during the ceremony at Logan airport, the Greek flag was hoisted and the national anthem was played.

In his statements, the Greek-American longest-serving governor of Massachusetts and former US presidential candidate Michael Doukakis hailed this “success”, talking about “a historical development that brings Greece closer to the Greek community.”

It is noted that the new route is operated three times a week, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday and is connected to 21 US cities, with A330-300 aircraft.
