Buying a monitor, especially a gaming monitor, can be quite a challenge. There are many factors to consider. The Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) introduced the ClearMR standard, which measures motion blur. The new specification should make it easier for buyers to choose a monitor, as it shows how well the monitor handles scenes with motion blur.
Motion blur takes into account the time it takes for a pixel to transition from one color to another. That’s why the tests that test this setting include options for switching between different hues, such as the black to white test. If the response time remains low, then this is good for the monitor, since blur in this case is minimal, and the sharpness of moving objects is maintained at a high level. However, VESA now believes that such tests cannot accurately measure the level of motion blur.
According to VESA, modern displays are equipped with a number of technologies that artificially increase the pixel response time. This is especially true for gaming monitors, where some parameters are deliberately overstated, while others are underestimated. ClearMR restricts the use of such enhancers that increase only certain parameters in certain scenarios.
VESA has developed a new special ranking system called the CMR range. It includes a total of seven levels: CMR 3000, 4000, 5000, 6000, 7000, 8000 and 9000. A high-speed camera and a brightness measurement device are used for testing. The resulting data is then compiled and converted into a CMR value. The first level is the lowest, it is suitable for laptops with 90-120 Hz screens. The best performance is noted at the level of CMR 9000, where there is practically no blur effect. Monitors that meet this level receive the ClearMR certification badge, which manufacturers will stick somewhere on the front.
Samsung and LG have already received ClearMR certifications for several of their monitors. Over time, more products, including TVs, will be VESA certified to inform consumers.
