Executive Vice President of the European Commission, Valdis Dombrovskis said on Tuesday (15) that economic growth in the European Union will be “severely impacted” by the conflict arising from the invasion of Ukraine by Russia.
Still, Dombrovskis characterized the fundamentals of the economy in the region as “strong”. “We will be able to withstand the crisis”, he assured, in a press conference after the meeting of Ecofin, a group that brings together EU finance ministers.
Dombrovskis also stressed that the bloc will increase pressure against Russia if the government of Vladimir Putin intensifies the “aggression” in the neighboring territory.
The Latvian politician, who is also trade commissioner, added that “all options are on the table” regarding sanctions against Moscow, but declined to provide details on next steps.
French Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire, who participated in the same press conference, expressed concern about the emergence of a possible global food crisis, especially in Africa, due to the situation in Eastern Europe, which concentrates significant wheat production.
