Victory against censorship: gay kissing returns in the animated film Lightyear

A recent statement from some workers of the production company Pixar accused the Walt Disney Company (of which Pixar is a part) of having over the years had an attitude of censorship towards scenes that explicitly represent love affairs between characters of the same sex (and more generally towards the introduction of LGBTIQ + characters). He complains that he recently also hit the scene of a kiss between Alicia Hawthorne, a female character from Lightyear – The true story of Buzz, and his partner. A cut on which the US company has backtracked after the grievances of some of its workers and which assumes a peculiar importance considering that this will be the first animated film by Disney-Pixar destined for the big screen since 2019.

In fact, there are not many cases of LGBTIQ + characters in animated films, especially when it comes to films intended for cinema. In the case of Pixar, some hint of same-sex relationships can be found in Looking for Dory (not openly confirmed by the film’s creators themselves); in Toy Story 4, where two mothers hug their children as they greet him in kindergarten; finally a policewoman who appears in some scenes of Onward mentions his girlfriend.

A separate discussion must be made for the animated short film Out (distributed on Disney + and not in theaters), where LGBTIQ + issues are instead at the center of the plot, which sees a man grappling with the difficulties inherent in the crucial moment of the coming out with their parents. A brave animated film, where there is also the scene of a homosexual kiss. Precisely in relation to the statement that Pixar employees made, the director of Out, Steven Clay Huntersaid a Variety: «I’m on the side of my colleagues. I am very proud that they have made themselves heard. We need it. […] We cannot imagine that these laws they are trying to introduce are not offensive, intolerant and, frankly, evil. ‘

It refers, among others, to decree called “Don’t say gay”approved in Florida to prohibit dealing with issues related to gender identity and sexual orientation in public schools. This decree is at the heart of some controversy which also involved Disney, which did not immediately take sides against the measure.

According to some anonymous sources inside Pixar reported by Variety, Disney would not be very inclined to exhibit scenes of affection between homosexual characters for commercial reasons: distribution, in particular, could be penalized in those countries that do not take kindly to the requests of the LGBTIQ + community, including China, Russia and some states of Western Asia and South America. It is no coincidence that the lesbian policewoman’s Onward made sure the film came banned in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait And Oman; in Russiafurthermore, the word “fiancée” has been replaced with the more semantically neutral word “partner”.
