Victory for unions in Germany: German railway company Deutsche Bahn agrees to cut working hours

Germany's national railway company Deutsche Bahn announced today that it has agreed to gradually reduce the working hours of train drivers as part of a wage deal reached with the GDL union, ending months of conflict and strike action. “The dispute has been difficult, but we have now been able to agree on an intelligent compromise,” Deutsche Bahn said in a statement after announcing the deal late Monday night. A “working hours corridor” will be created which will allow train drivers to gradually reduce their working time to 35 hours a week by 2029, while maintaining the same level of wages. Specifically, the working week “will be reduced to 37 hours in 2026, to 36 hours in 2027, to 35.5 hours in 2028 and to 35 hours in 2029”.
