The Utica, New York, police department released body camera footage on Saturday (29) showing an officer shooting a teenager after he fled the scene and displayed what police believed to be a firearm.
A police officer was seen performing chest compressions on the boy after he was shot on Friday (28).
Reuters was able to locate the video from nearby buildings, road layouts and vegetation that matched satellite imagery and street views. Corroborating video showed the same scene. Reuters was able to confirm the date of this video from the timestamp on the video.
The teen was identified as 13-year-old Nyah Mway, Utica police said in a statement on their Facebook page.
According to US media, Nyah’s family are refugees who belong to an ethnic group in Myanmar.
Utica Police Chief Mark Williams said at a news conference Saturday that the boy’s gun was later determined to be a replica Glock 17 pistol with a detachable magazine, which he described as a BB gun.
Utica police said in their statement that two investigations were being conducted and hoped that “an impartial, fair and thorough investigation process” would answer any remaining questions.
