Video: Balloon tears and Colombian athlete crashes during jump, in Boituva (SP)

A Colombian athlete suffered an accident after the balloon in which he was performing a jump tore, on June 1st, in Boituva, in the interior of São Paulo. Jhovanny Echavarría Durán sank and was hit by fire.

A CNN this Thursday (20) , the athlete, known as “Colombia”, said that he was with two other parachutists at the top of the balloon when the fabric tore and he fell inside. When hitting the torch, Jheovanny covered his face with his hands to protect himself from the fire. See the video:

“As I fell, I felt like I hit my leg and arm, at the moment I hit the balloon torch. I went to the outside managing to have stability control and manage to control my parachute”, said the athlete.

The Colombian said he then managed to open his parachute and land on a farm with a broken leg and several injuries. In a report, the parachutist stated that he waited for around 1h30 until someone arrived to help him.

After contacting the ballooning company, assistance arrived quickly and he was taken to the Boituva hospital where the first femur surgery was performed to immobilize the leg. Durán was transferred to Sorocaba hospital and was discharged on June 10 after a second surgery.

The Grillo Ballooning team stated, in a statement, that the balloon landed safely and is sorry for what happened. “Everything has already been passed on to the competent authorities […] the athlete who is most affected is at home and recovering.”

“Now I’m at home making a good recovery, with a lot of pain, but thank God I’m fine,” the parachutist told CNN .
