Video: crater opens on Santa Catarina highway after city is hit by tornado

A crater opened after the asphalt gave way on a highway in Santa Catarina. The incident took place on SC-135, near Rio das Antas, a municipality in Santa Catarina that is 430 km from Florianópolis. The destruction of the section of road was recorded on the day of a tornado and during a period of heavy rain in the city.

According to information shared by Rio das Antas city hall, the track was flooded after a gallery that runs beneath the road overflowed due to the rain. Although it was momentarily released, a crack appeared in the highway, which completely collapsed shortly afterwards. Traffic was completely stopped. See the video:

To allow residents to move around, the city council released alternative routes, via the SC-355 and SC-350 highways, for example. With detours, some routes take up to 40 minutes longer. The road repairs are expected to be completed next week.

Tornado passage

According to Santa Catarina Civil Defense, the tornado that hit Rio das Antas was of weak intensity. Despite this, the weather event and rain left other damage in the region.

“Unroofing, damage to an orchard and partial destruction of a shed were reported,” said Civil Defense in a meteorological note. See photos:
