Video: Elderly is overthrown by a police officer in protest in Argentina

An elderly woman was overthrown by a police officer during a retirement protest in the capital of Argentina, Buenos Aires, on Wednesday (12).

Protesters oppose President Javier Milei’s government measures, such as the veto to the pension reform and drug cuts. The group’s demonstrations are regular on Wednesdays.

On Wednesday, fans of various football teams in the country joined protesters, including major clubs such as Boca Juniors, River Plate, Independiente, Racing, San Lorenzo, Vélez Sarsfield and others. According to information from TN, affiliated broadcaster of CNN more than 150 people were arrested during the protest.

Amid the conflicts of protesters with the police, a video widely circulated on Argentine and social networks shows an elderly woman being pushed by a police officer. She falls and hits her head on the asphalt then.

According to information from the Argentine newspaper La Nación, the woman is called Beatriz Bianco and is 87 years old. She was transferred to Argerich hospital after the fall, according to the vehicle.

Police used pepper spray, rubber bullets and a water cannon to dissipate the crowd that threw stones and other objects back, according to TN.

In a statement hours earlier, the Argentine Security Ministry said that given the possible participation of football team fans, “strict measures will be implemented to ensure order and public safety.”

Part of the elderly who protest for better income conditions gain minimum retirement of 279,000 pesos, about 1,300 reais, with a reinforcement bonus of 70 thousand pesos (338 reais).

In order not to be below the poverty line in Argentina, according to the country’s National Institute of Statistics and Census (Indec), an adult needs 334,000 pesos, or the equivalent of 1,600 reais.
