The former president of Bolivia, Evo Morales, posted this Sunday (27) a video showing a shooting attack on his vehicle. The indigenous leader claims that the episode was an assassination attempt and that at least 14 shots were fired.
“They are shooting at us,” says Morales, who was in the passenger seat during the episode, when asking for help on his cell phone. One of the passengers warns that they are shooting at the tires. In the video, it is possible to see at least three impacts against the windshield and the rear glass hit and shattered. The driver ended up injured in the head.
On social media, Evo stated that the episode occurred at 6:20 in the morning when he was heading to a radio station where he broadcasts a program on Sundays. “We were intercepted by two vehicles”, he states, adding: “4 hooded agents dressed in black came down with weapons in their hands and started shooting”.
In the video it is also possible to see the car stopping and Evo alerting a police officer about the episode. The attack occurs amid growing tensions due to the subpoena for the former president to give testimony for alleged relations with a minor. He did not appear, and according to authorities, an arrest warrant may be issued for him.
In protest against Evo’s imminent arrest, supporters of the former president are blocking roads, mainly in the vicinity of Cochabamba.
Luis Arce’s government claims that the demonstrations are causing food and fuel shortages.
A former ally of Arce and now in open confrontation with the current Bolivian president, Evo claims that the legal case against him is political persecution and denies the accusations.

On Saturday night (26), the Bolivian Foreign Ministry published a statement denouncing to the international community that “a series of destabilizing actions led by former president Evo Morales are “under way” in the country, which aim to disrupt the democratic order”.
The statement warns that the situation constitutes “a serious threat not only to Bolivia, but also to the stability and security” of the region.
“These actions have intensified in the last 13 days, with a criminal blockade of roads”, he explains, denouncing the participation of “violent groups supporting former president Evo Morales, in some cases armed, who made public threats of bloodshed”. The text also says that these groups left 14 police officers injured “with serious and very serious injuries”.
