Military personnel from the Brazilian Air Force (FAB) used a helicopter to rescue a 2-year-old child who was in a hospital stranded by the rains in Rio Grande do Sul and needed urgent transfer.
The hospital where the child was admitted is in Faxinal do Soturno, in the central region of Rio Grande do Sul and approximately 330 km from Porto Alegre.
According to the FAB, since last Wednesday (1st) attempts had been made to rescue the child, “but the weather conditions made it impossible to carry out the mission”. The city is one of those that was greatly affected by the storms in Rio Grande do Sul, with bridges destroyed and access blocked.
The rescue was carried out using an H60L Black Hawk helicopter. The aircraft landed at Santa Maria air base, which is about 55 km away. The child was taken to a referral hospital with an advanced ICU.
To date, Rio Grande do Sul has had 13 people dead due to the rains, in addition to 12 injured and 21 missing. Around 44,640 people were affected, of which 5,257 were homeless and 3,079 were sent to shelters.
