In addition to the impacts on homes, the flooding of Lake Guaíba also affected cultural sites in Porto Alegre. An icon of the city, the Casa de Cultura Mário Quintana, where the poet once lived, was hit by water, but its collection was almost completely preserved. However, a neighboring establishment was not so lucky.
The traditional Tavern Bookstore, located in the same building, suffered severe damage. With water reaching much of the stock, many books were lost, despite efforts to increase volumes. See the video above.
Ederson Lopes, one of the owners, reports that the team followed the news about the intense rains in the region and the forecasts for a rise in the level of the Guaíba. They tried to take preventative measures, but water ended up invading the bookstore.
“We had a total loss of the furniture here, and the books, now the situation is as follows: as there was a decline, we are carrying out a joint effort to try to remove the books here from the space, because as the bookstore is underwater, it is completely flooded, the humidity density in here is very high,” explains Ederson.
While the Casa de Cultura preserved its heritage, Livraria Taverna now faces the challenge of recovering what remains of its collection and assessing the damage caused by the flood.
