“Video game scam”: man arrested for attempted embezzlement in RJ

A man was arrested for carrying out the “video game scam” in Niterói, in the metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro. According to the Civil Police, Matheus Rodrigues Alves, 25 years old, is a member of a gang that committed fraud via the internet.

According to investigations, criminals contacted people who placed advertisements for video games on Facebook Marketplace, and, through a fake profile, informed them that a relative would be interested in the purchase. A cell phone number was provided for trading on Whatsapp.

In the messages, the scammers convinced the victim to advertise on a well-known website for buying and selling products, where they supposedly had credit. Then, they sent proof of payments and false emails confirming the transaction, generally for amounts above R$2,500.

To give credibility to the story, according to investigations, the criminals sent a photo holding a document, but, in fact, the record was from a person who had also been a victim previously.

Then, the criminals would send an app driver, usually in good faith, to pick up the video game with the victim and take it to another point where another member of the gang is responsible for receiving the device.

The police reached the criminals through a complaint from a victim, who was suspicious of the action. Police officers from the Itaipu Police Station (81st DP) followed the app car sent by the criminal from Niterói until the meeting with the criminal on Avenida Niemeyer, at one of the access points to the Community of Vidigal, in Rio de Janeiro, where the arrest took place.

During the investigations, the police discovered that there were other procedures in which video games were delivered to the same location, close to the walkway at one of the accesses to the Vidigal Community, as well as crimes that occurred in October and December of last year, in which the criminal He pretended to be the same person in exchanges of messages with the victims, sending a photo holding the document of a resident of another state.

Matheus, who has eight notes among crimes and infractions, such as association for drug trafficking, torture, homicide, robbery, kidnapping, will now be indicted for attempted embezzlement, a crime of criminal association and resistance.
