One group of about 30 dolphins and a right whale were seen in Sepetiba Bay, in Rio de Janeiro on the afternoon of last Wednesday (4). The episode was caught by a team from the Environmental Institute of the Environment (Inea) that was carrying out a routine activity in the region and recorded the moment.
In the images, taken using a drone, it is possible to see the right whale with its calf, who were resting approximately 4 kilometers away from the dolphins.
According to expert Leonardo Flach, right whales are resting in Rio’s waters until the moment they have to return to their usual space.
Furthermore, Flach comments that the coast of Rio is not part of the route of this species of whale, which normally, when visiting the country to reproduce, go to the coast of Santa Catarina, in the south of Brazil.
Whales and dolphins, also called gray dolphins, belong to the cetacean group of aquatic mammals.
They live along the entire Brazilian coast, but are concentrated especially in Sepetiba Bay, home to the largest population of dolphins in South America.
