Video: in Rio, residents use lasers to warn drivers about robbers

Residents of buildings in Recreio dos Bandeirantes, in the west of Rio de Janeiro, are using green laser pens to warn drivers about hidden robbers preparing to rob drivers. The objective is to try to prevent criminal actions.

In a video published on social media, it is possible to see a suspect approaching the bike path on the coast and waiting for the moment to act. When crossing the grass, residents begin to identify you with the green laser, alerting drivers.

The video was recorded on Avenida Salvador Allende, close to Lagoa de Jacarepaguá.

In the scene, the criminal ends up giving up on the robbery and returns to the sandy part of the beach where there is no light. When the laser is not enough, residents end up screaming.

When contacted, the Military Police of Rio de Janeiro reported that it has reinforced policing in the region and that it constantly carries out patrols on the edge of Recreio dos Bandeirantes.

According to data from the Public Security Institute regarding theft from passers-by, in 2024 there was a 26% reduction in registered cases compared to the same period in 2023.

The corporation also highlights that the region, covered by the Batalhão do Recreio dos Bandeirantes (31st BPM), has the highest number of arrests in the city, with an average of 118 records per month.
